REC Manchester Social – Putting, Pizza and Pricey Cocktails

skull from night out

A late September afternoon, 5pm and bellies full of pizza, a surprisingly large proportion of REC headed out towards the bright lights of Media City for a much over-due staff social. Organised by REC Manchester social events duo Karis Strong and Emma Prendergast, the first stop was REC’s favourite watering hole, The Dockyard. The sun was out just long enough for us to sit outside and enjoy a drink and some light hearted chatter – (sunshine in Manchester, who would of thought it!?). After a mad rush to the tram, we all arrived at Piccadilly Train Station successfully and trekked the mere five minute walk to Junkyard Golf – still managing to lose half the group along the way.

Karis, Organisational Queen, sorted us all into groups and then let us loose amongst the two courses – “Pablo” and “Frieda”. “Pablo”, boasting the theme of a Polluted Paradise, was very apt for the REC Air Quality Team, whilst “Frieda” I’m sure reminded Associate Director, John Goodwin, of his pre-fatherhood raving days. Nine holes and a lot of laughs later, we all re-convened in the Junkyard bar for the priciest cocktails out there, before asking a bemused stranger to take a family-esque photo of us in front of a golden golf caddy.

It was eventually decided that the evening would be moved on to cheaper pastures – to PLY, located in Manchester’s famous Northern Quarter. And so, I began a walking tour through Manchester City Centre – managing to lose half of the group again, despite it being not too far away. I think those cocktails may have been a factor!

Although planned originally as the staff social, the night also hosted Consultant Graham Walker’s leaving do and the welcoming of Graduate Geo-Environmental Consultant, Claire Harrison. Once we had all arrived at PLY, the large table we managed to reserve allowed for twenty plus of us to chat and mix with the other teams away from work – making a refreshing difference to sitting in the office!

All in all, the evening was a huge success and a special shout out to the winners of Junkyard Golf; Seema Fakira, Adam Mayes, Conal Kearney. Thanks to Emma and Karis for organising such a fantastic night and thank you to all that made it – roll on the Christmas social!
