‘‘Community Resilience for Flooding’‘

Sam Weller, Head of Civil Protection – Swindon Borough Council

The risk of flooding could be a thing of the past in Swindon with the announcement of an innovative project that will better protect homes and businesses.

The Flood Resilience Community Pathfinder Scheme was launched by DEFRA in December 2012. The intention is to develop a network of Community Flood Champions to work on educating people. The pilot scheme will focus on the east Swindon area.

Sam Weller will outline the scheme and its potential impact on the local region.

‘‘Effective Early Site Assessment’‘

Paul Dennis, Associate Director – REC Ltd

Paul will use some examples of applying a pragmatic approach to brownfield issues (including flood risk, contaminated land and ecology) to demonstrate how they have assisted developers discharge planning conditions for various types and sizes of project.

‘‘Long term development in Swindon’‘

Les Durrant, Chairman and Managing Director – DPDS Consulting

Les will focus on the long term constraints to development and business growth in Swindon posed by topography, flood plains, ecology, landscape, heritage issues and in particular transport links/infrastructure. Les will also present on how these issues might be addressed in a senstive political situation of Swindon/Wiltshire cross border collaboration.

The informal discussion will take place over breakfast, giving Chamber members and representatives from other local organisations the opportunity to discuss such issues in a relaxed and professional environment.
