Asbestos is a highly dangerous material which if disturbed can be potentially deadly for those who breath in the harmful fibres. Therefore, if you suspect the presence of asbestos at your development or residence, ensuring the testing of a sample at an UKAS accredited laboratory is essential.
So, what happens to your asbestos sample once it reaches the REC laboratory?
Your sample(s) will be picked up by one of our experienced P401 analysts and assigned a tracker number. Tracker is the database that REC use to produce the final bulk certificate that you will receive once your sample has been analysed. Your bulk certificate will contain details of the site address, the location of the sample, when it was received by the lab, when it was analysed, who analysed the sample and our findings. At this stage we will check the packaging to ensure all samples have been double bagged and the packaging is not damaged; samples are only unpackaged within our HEPA fume hoods in order to maintain the strict healthy and safety regulations of the laboratory.
All samples are reviewed in accordance to ‘due date’. The team of REC analysts work through asbestos samples methodically – therefore when it’s the turn of your sample(s) it will be picked up by the next available P401 trained analysts. All our analysts undertake monthly quality checks, Asbestos in Materials Scheme (AIMS) and Asbestos in Soils Scheme (AISS) reviews to ensure complete competence and the highest quality of work.
Your asbestos sample will be taken into a HEPA filter fume hood (one sample at a time to avoid cross contamination) and unpackaged for the first time. The sample is then viewed under a stereomicroscope and any suspect fibres identified using polarised light microscopy.
Once a full analysis of your sample has been completed, the results will be inputted into the REC data system, including material type and all observations seen under the microscopes. A bulk certificate is then generated and sent directly to you via the email address you provided.
Your asbestos sample is then placed into secure storage for 6 months before being safely disposed of.
