Biodiversity in the UK has been declining for several decades and its conservation is now delivered through the planning system and companies/personal initiatives. In February 2013, Sophie Mairesse – Senior Ecologist in the REC London office, became aware that the British Standard Institute (BSI) was commissioning a standard on biodiversity management to address this issue and was looking for specialists from relevant professional backgrounds to join the standard panel.
Sophie, who always had a strong interest in biodiversity, thought that being involved in the drafting of the standard would be a great opportunity to help increase people’s biodiversity awareness and how to manage it. Sophie was delighted when her application to join the panel responsible for drafting the guidance on biodiversity management was accepted. In the intervening period, Sophie has become a panel Convenor, reviewed the standard drafts and attended draft review meetings.
The involvement of key REC staff members with such projects is supported and encouraged to ensure we are at the forefront of scientific developments. This knowledge can then be transferred to aid our clients in achieving their aims whilst mitigating any adverse environmental impacts.
