Canal Side Remediation Scheme
A leading construction company commissioned REC to review the remediation requirements of a contaminated site with a long industrial history in north-west London.
REC formulated a strategy to fully define the contamination distribution and based upon this prepare a revised, zoned remediation strategy.
-
Targeted further site investigation to determine the contamination distribution within the soils across the site and delineation of a hydrocarbon contaminant plume within the groundwater.
-
Zoned risk assessment based upon the contaminant distribution and the proposed land end usage.
-
Design of a revised, more selective, remediation strategy based upon the zoned risk assessment.
-
Preparation of a Remediation Method Statement and submission to the regulatory authorities for approval.
-
On site pre-treatment of contaminated materials prior to removal to landfill to reduce the disposal costs.
- Due to the proximity of a canal all site works and the remediation strategy had to accommodate a buffer zone to protect the physical and chemical integrity of the canal wall.
-
Validation of the remediation works was undertaken and reports submitted to the regulatory authorities for approval.
The
targeted remediation work and on site pre-treatment of contaminated material significantly reduced the remediation costs as compared with a more generic approach.
Japanese Knotweed
In addition to the chemical contamination arising from the historic site usage Japanese Knotweed was also discovered at the site. REC was able to provide a remediation strategy and supervision and documentation of the works.
