REC Ltd Landfill Construction Services Engineers

Landfill Design and Construction Services

Landfill Construction Introduction:

The Landfill Regulations 2002 came into force in June 2002 and implement the EU Landfill Directive. This was designed to prevent or minimise the negative environmental impacts resulting from the operation of landfills. Implemented via PPC regulations, these now pose fresh technical challenges for landfill operators, waste disposal contractors and their advisers. Among these challenges are:

  • The use of best available techniques for the disposal of waste.
  • Control of leachate and gas emissions.
  • Waste characterization (Hazardous, Non-hazardous, or Inert).
  • Monitoring of environmental impact.
  • Choice of appropriate geological and hydrogeological settings.

Construction Of Landfill Site Project Summary

Construction Quality Assurance (CQA)

REC provide a CQA service to clients ensuring that all construction activities relating to the engineering of landfill basal, drainage layers, caps and sidewalls are constructed in accordance with an Environment Agency agreed plan. The construction of these layers is overseen by experienced engineers by the use of non destructive field techniques and by the use of laboratory measurements.

Fate and transport modelling is sometimes used to assess the off site migration of List 1 and List 2 substances emanating from the base or sidewalls of any landfill.

Environmental Monitoring

REC are well versed in the monitoring of landfill gases leachates noise, dust and odours as part of the conditions relating to the operation of a site. Together with it’s sister company (SAL Ltd) an MCERTS and UKAS accredited laboratory, REC are able to provide a one stop solution to the monitoring of the impact of a landfill site. By using the integrated laboratory and consultancy services the client can be assured of high quality data reinforced by extensive laboratory check protocols.

Environmental Modelling

REC has extensive experience of the application of computer modelling for the determination of environmental impact of landfill operations on groundwater resources and human health. LANDSIM and GasSim are routinely used as part of the assessment of the impact of new facilities (and existing sites) on the environment. Software such as GasSim are used to model the migration of trace landfill gases to offsite receptors such as domestic properties.
