Contaminated Land Introduction to REC

The variety and size of project types we have worked on is unparalleled–everything from small, pre-acquisition site “health checks” through to multi-site complex brownfield remediation schemes, including;

  • investigation and cleanup of pollution spills on sensitive operational sites;

  • liability assessments relating to land acquisition or divestment;

  • decontamination of former military and heavy industrial sites;

  • development of derelict sites for commercial use and residential housing;

REC has investigated and provided remedial advice on ground and groundwater contamination for a wide variety of sites for private and public sector clients.

Our knowledge covers the full range of contaminants including oil and petroleum products, tars, toxic metals, pesticides, PCB’s and chlorinated solvents. Depending on what we are asked to do, we will help to find the entire solution to the problem or a solution to just part of it. Anything from the initial scientific assessments through to the design, implementation and aftercare of full remedial programmes.

Pre-Acquisition Auditing and Desk Studies

REC offers specialist pre-acquisition, pre-divestiture, re-financing and regulatory compliance audits.

Our experienced auditors assess the potential contaminated land liabilities resulting from the existing and historical land use, the site setting and targets potentially susceptible to contamination. We can also conduct rapid and comprehensive Phase II site investigations in order to provide the additional assurance that is required for some transaction decisions.

Contaminated Site Risk Assessment

Recently revised regulations governing the cleanup of contaminated land and groundwater use risk assessment procedures as the foundation for decision making and regulatory approval.

REC is a leader in the use of risk assessment methodologies which ensure the clean-up undertaken is appropriate for the anticipated use of the site and is cost-effective. Our methodologies range from simple qualitative procedures used rapidly to identify critical liabilities to the application of complex contaminant fate and transport modelling.

Geotechnical services

A Geotechnical assessment is key to any construction project as all subsequent work relies on the information obtained from it; REC promotes the concept of maximising the value of intrusive investigations by combining a geotechnical survey with a contamination assessment. Such a proactive approach reduces the potential for unforeseen ground conditions resulting in costly delays and overruns.

Site Remediation and Validation Services

Many contaminated sites have land quality issues that are familiar and which require conventional solutions. A small proportion however requires more complex treatment involving novel and technically advanced solutions. As you would expect from a leading environmental consultancy, REC has the expertise to design and deliver appropriate treatment regimes including: soil washing, separation, air sparging, bioremediation, soil vapour extraction and hydrocarbon recovery.

Our clients can be sure that we know which options are available, which the most appropriate solutions to the problem are, and which offer the best value for money and long term peace of mind.
