 Odour
and Air Project Summaries:
Odour Assessment , Soya Processing
Works, Liverpool
REC undertook a sampling programme to assess
odours produced from various emission points
relating to soya processing works. REC
commissioned an Odour Panel and by a series of
controlled dilutions an odour number was
determined for the each emission. The data was
used to determine which emissions required
controlling to prevent odour nuisance.
Ambient Air Quality Survey for
PM10, NOx and CO, York
Continuous monitoring of PM10, NO, NOx as NO2
and CO at three sites over a two week period.
The analysers were set up in secure metal cabins
with power supplied by the Local Authority from
lampposts. The data was to be used in a
dispersion modelling study to be carried out by
another consultancy. REC prepared the data in
the required format (15 min, 1 hour 8 hour and
24 hour averages) for direct input into the
model.
Odour Sampling
Projects have been undertaken on odour
emitted from distilleries for United
Distillers and Whyte & Mackay.
Odour Monitoring, Bacton,
Norfolk
The Environment Agency had received a number
of complaints of odour nuisance from residents
close to natural gas terminals at Bacton. REC
was commissioned by the EA to sample and analyse
ambient air from various locations around the
plant to identify and measure ambient
concentrations of trace volatile organic
compounds, particularly organo-sulphur compounds
and sulphur dioxide. Air Quality
Monitoring included the collection of grab samples
were taken in Tedlar bags at
various downwind distances from the gas
terminals, together with an upwind control sample.
Sampling over longer periods was undertaken with
specially prepared adsorption tubes. Samples
were subsequently analysed using a high
resolution GC/MS system. The tubes were
thermally desorbed and scanned by GC/MS for
trace organics.
